there’s a certain retro sound going around these days. you know, the 70s rock and roll southern grunge sound. the classic straight-ahead heartfelt gritty sound is back and gaining steam. the georgia thunderbolts certainly fit this description and honestly, is a much welcome leader in this 70s southern rock revival. with the new release, rise above it all, the georgia thunderbolts solidify their place at the top of the pack of southern grunge today.
the sound itself isn’t new. if so, it would not do such a good job of reminding us of the best rock and roll had to offer in the 70s. the “southern” grunge found anywhere from skynyrd to molly hatchet. rock and roll with an attitude talking about life and what a pain in the ass life can be. the love also. the trick is to tell the story in such a manner you get pulled into the music and find shades of your own life. and then a new song just hits you in such a familiar way.
moonlight play hit home in a way i wasn’t expecting. isn’t that what new music is supposed to do?
the sound, the style, the story, the “fuck yea” you feel when you feel like someone else understands. everything about this song seems to be an accumulation of all the things i love about this style of music. it’s one of those songs that simply gets everything right.
from “moonlight play”
Of all the times we’ve shared
Our world just gets better
We’re living for everything that’s right
We can’t look back on yesterday
Tomorrow takes it’s place
You know it’s not guaranteed anyway
while i don’t know for sure what he’s singing about, i know what it means to me. everything. thank you.
now it took me a few hours of self-reflection and hitting rewind a lot to get past moonlight play, and all i can do is get amazed.
time and time again.
wait is the release off this effort that is likely to find the most airplay. it’s just a feelgood song of patience and understanding. it also ties into how the previous song fits into my life but for different reasons. well, same puzzle, different pieces for me. isn’t it amazing how music can put those pieces together for you?
for the sound itself, it’s what i grew up with in the 70s, hearing it when it was new. im pretty sure the problems of life i face today are not the same as that 10-year-old child i used to be, experiencing things for the first time. yet, you can hear a song for the first time and be back to that feeling all over again. maybe that’s how you know an artist has captured that time.
you simply feel it. and it feels like home. like a 1970s something you want back. there are several songs on rise above it all that do this for me. now there may be a million reasons why music moves you and none of those reasons may be why the artist wrote that particular song. doesn’t matter. music is emotion and expression and when you get it right, you get something like rise above it all from the georgia thunderbolts.
and that is a wonderful thing.
if you’re into good straight-ahead rock and roll, you’ll find it here. from a “tear the roof off” sound to a “let’s sit here and think about life for a bit” feeling, you’re covered. songs like pricetag, rise above it all, and she’s gonna get it that will rock you out; to wait and moonlight play that inspire the mellow mood – the entire gambit of emotions is here for the taking.
take it and don’t let go. rise above it all certainly rises above the rest.
i’ll be keeping my eye on the tour schedule and have a photopass request ready to send you. 🙂
