It was a Dorothy, Lita Ford, Halestorm concert at Gas Monkey Live, Dallas Texas of all places that I first heard of and got to see Dorothy live. While I’ve loosely followed her career over the years since then, only a few songs like Flawless and Rest in Peace stood out to me as ones to keep going back to. However, if you’ve paid attention over the last few years, you’ve seen THE WAY coming together and this changes everything for me and Dorothy.
Gritty vocals in a back bar type blues manner have always been the hallmark for her sound. Sultry certainly comes to mind when you hear Dorothy’s voice. Damn sultry. If you can make the religious experience “Testify!” sexy, Dorothy does it. That gift has not changed over the years, and you hear it time and time again all through THE WAY.
So, let’s just skip all the preview and dive right into this latest release.
I’ve already got a smile as the first song, “I COME ALIVE” starts up. There it is, that sexy, sultry, TESTIFY voice. The hard driving rock and roll soon follows and we start off with a high energy that will be fun to sustain.
You may want to slam an energy drink before you listen to this. I’ve managed to work my way to TOMBSTONE TOWN with Slash and the energy simply does not stop. Energy pushed ahead to full bore, and it is quite the musical rush!
The gospel experience simply complements the hard driving music song after song while making your way through THE WAY.
Each song brings a power of it’s own that is undeniable. You really don’t take much of a break until you get to PUTTIN’ OUT THE FIRE.
As it winds down, there’s a good chance you’re mentally and emotionally exhausted at this point. The power and energy will certainly entertain you wherever you happen to listen. If live? Wow – that’s going to be an AMAZING live show. It’s one of those things you can just feel as you wrap up your first run through THE WAY. Renegade Radio will certainly be putting in for a photo pass on this one. It was early in my photography career when I first had the opportunity to photograph Dorothy, and I’d love to try this one again!
So, wait; which is my favorite song in all this? Well, oddly enough, the last one. THE WAY. I always gravitate to the slower, introspective types of songs and when they are pulled off with such vocal emotion, I certainly get pulled in. Thank you, and so well done!
