They can't stand it that he won't discuss controversy. They feed on it. Can't write without it. Are lost without it.

I am convinced the media here would love to have Pacman, TO, and Quincy back. They'd love for Dez to fall apart. They'd love it most of all if Tony Romo would. Nothing fuels them more than a QB controversy. You've already seen some of it in small doses in comments about Orton not coming here to be a backup.

Remember this the first time Tony has a big mistake in a game this year, the media will begin calling for Orton to take over.

So what is the biggest controversy of the 2012 off season so far? Mike Jenkins. I have lost track of how many times Jerry has been asked about trading him and said we are not going to. I don't think they believe it.

Jenkins, a 1st round pick, 4 year starter in his contract year, may be being pushed aside for a high priced Free Agent and a new 1st round draft pick. Rumors of trade offers and trade demands by Jenkins' agent have hit our pages. Jenkins is injured. He had a mini holdout, if you can call it that. He was in Florida not Dallas. The liquor store guy says he doesn't expect to be here much longer.

Okay, so the DFW media don't know what we know about the liquor store guy. So what? If they did, you can bet they'd be down there hoping that booze purchases gave tantalizing tidbits of info for them to create a controversy.

Today was another Jason Garrett Coach Speak Press Conference. It started at the seven minute mark, an innocuous lead in question about Jenkins shoulder surgery. A fair question, but you can almost feel the tension in the room increase because the media suddenly knew, we're talking about controversy now.

Garrett, to his credit, did not take the bait other than to explain Jenkins shoulder surgery was a bit complicated.

Not good enough for Steve Dennis, my favorite DFW media punching bag. Take a look at how he phrased his question.

"Jason, I really am not trying to be antagonistic here (smile from Jason Garrett and a slight laugh) but I want to be clear on this. Jenkins isn't talking to us. So we're to understand from the team point of view and from his point of view, there was never any discord, and going forward everything is just the way it would have been? Without him demanding a trade?"

Are you kidding me? Could you be more obvious in your attempt to manufacture an issue on this football team Steve? Jenkins isn't talking to you, but Garrett is supposed to know his point of view?

I love the smile and slight laugh from Garrett. He's on to his game so much that Steve has to try and swerve him away from that line of thinking.

Jason Garrett, ever the one in control of the Press Conferences, does not go where Steve Dennis and the DFW media wanted him to go. He made it clear, there is no controversy.

He talked about encouraging Jenkins to be part of the off season program. He talked about how the other practices were voluntary, and how Jenkins was not required to be there. He talked about how he is injured and couldn't have been there anyway. Now he is here. No controversy.

You can almost hear Steve Dennis losing his mind.

"Can I assume you had a question or two for him when you met with him today? Just to understand where his head is and all that?"

Okay, without even going into Garrett's answers yet, what questions would those be? Bet your bottom dollar Steve Dennis is hoping Garrett got all over Jenkins and into his business about being the only player not attending the other practices. Forget the fact Jason has already described them as voluntary. Forget the fact he has already said he could not have practiced anyway. "Tell us about the controversy Jason. We're begging you."

Where would his head be? I assume since Garrett has already reported that the Cowboys monitored his rehab in Florida and that their concern is his shoulder more than his head. But you see, Steve wants to know about trades, holdouts, and controversy. He doesn't want to hear that the Cowboys understand Jenkins actions. He can't fathom that. It isn't controversial.

Jason Garrett kills it immediately. "I've had conversations with Mike throughout the off season. So it's not like I haven't talked to him for a while and hey I've got to get all this information for a big discussion. We've had discussions throughout the off season."

And now the rest of the DFW media want in the discussion. They know what Steve Dennis is fishing for. He isn't catching anything. Maybe if we cast our lines in we'll get a hit.

"Well, if his not being here was not a big deal, the fact that he did express a desire to be traded, that's got to be something that's more of a big deal."

Jason Garrett isn't going to give them anything. I love this by the way.

"Yeah, we can keep talking about Mike Jenkins all day long, and we can try the questions a lot of different ways and I'll just try my best to stand up here and answer them."

He then again explains that Mike Jenkins chose not to be in the off season program, to rehab on his own. That the other practices were voluntary and he could not be forced to be there. That he is here for the mandatory practices, but can't practice anyway due to his injury. He's part of the team and will have a role.

If that sounds basically repetitive of what he has already told them it is because it is. The words change a little bit, but the story doesn't. Why should it?

Because they want Jason to be upset at Jenkins. Why? Because it would sell copy. Controversy is what they crave because they can't write without it.

Two and a half minutes of them probing, poking, and trying to get a confession that the Cowboys are mad at, disappointed in, or down on Mike Jenkins, and they got nothing but Coach Speak.

I freaking love it. Jason Garrett is the smartest man in that room for every Press Conference, and more than that, he is polished and in control. I think the world of Wade Phillips as a football guy, but he fumbled through Press Conferences like he as in pain. They fed off his discomfort and they loved it.

The worst part of this whole ordeal for the DFW Media is the team has adopted Garrett's coach speak. They don't talk about the past. They talk about day to day and being good today. They talk about process and wanting to improve, working to improve, trying to improve in all facets of the game.

Here's an idea for the DFW Media going forward. Instead of trying to dig up dirt, look for human interest angles, or here's an idea, try to learn the game and how this team is trying to build. Every time the DFW Media ask an actual football question, they do get good football answers. You'd think they would learn.
