So what song Have I decided to unleash on you this week? Well, I've always been a HUGE fan of THE CULT and upon hearing the new single from their forthcoming album, I went on a kick - and everybody knows when I go on a kick, I have to throw in some covers of their tunes while I'm at it. So with that being said, I have to say it was a pretty tough choice. There are a ton of covers out there from "She Sells Sanctuary" to "Love Removal Machine", even "Sweet Soul Sister", But I figured i'd go with one of my favorite tunes from the British rockers - "Rain".
"Rain" is the 2nd single off of the band's 1985 "Love" album - Often considered the album that brought them from sleazy-pub house band to an International level. "Rain" is a fan favorite and has consistently remained in the set list since it's release. At least, according to Wikipedia. Here is the original, for your listening (And viewing) pleasure!
Now, for the covers, I'll be honest. I had a LOT of trouble trying to decide which of these to leave out - So, I decided on keeping All 3. Each has it's own distinct style, and each also originates from a different country, Which might show how strong of influence THE CULT has proven to be over the last (Almost) 30 years.
So, We'll start with Cover #1 - German Industrial-Rock band (Although if you ask them, They'll call it "Gothic Novel Rock, Not having anything to do with Goth-Rock") ASP from their 2009 single "Wer sonst?"/"Im Märchenland" Here's their Facebooky-page thing..
Thoughts - The music caught me right off the bat. A Much heavier version, if you will - The vocals threw me for a loop at first - I almost turned it off, But once the chorus kicked in - I was sucked in. 15 more listens later, and I'm blogging about it..Literally discovered this while i was grabbing the link for the next version..
Vs.
Cover #2 - The Dutch. No, really. They're not THE Dutch (As in a government-sponsored entity), But they ARE from the wonderful world of Amsterdam, where kickass bands such as GOLDEN EARRING or THE NEW SHINING came from.. The Band's name is MY FAVORITE SCAR, and this is taken off of their Self-Titled 2010 debut album - yes, debut, not seasoned 5th album - first major label album, And I can say if they're this good starting off - I'm looking forward to what they come up with next. Go give 'em a LIKE on their Facebook Page and tell 'em Renegade sent ya!
Thoughts - This is an instant favorite. I remember hearing it last year sometime, but for some reason never bothered to take the time to really check it out again. I love all of the different elements in this - they really made it their own. Does it beat the original? No. Does it come close? That's questionable.
Last, But definately not Least...
Cover #3 - Italians. Yep. From Italy comes THEATRES DES VAMPIRES from their 2008 release "Anima Noir" - Here's Their Facebook Page
Thoughts - I remember when I first heard this, back in my Grave Disorder days (Which really wasn't THAT long ago. Long enough though.) I fell instantly in love with it, and it made MANY appearances.. Everything about this song - pending you can handle thick Italian accents - is fantastic. They too, definately give their own flavor/twist/spice to the song.
I could honestly go on about all three, as well as the original, until my fingers fell off - But I'll save that for you. I definately can't pick a favorite on this lineup - Each band gives the song their own unique spin, keeps faithful enough so that you recognize it, yet can still stand on their own. Some people say they hate cover songs because they think it takes away from the original artist - and that the artist Performing the cover isn't Original enough to come up with their own music.. I'm pretty sure Any one of these are prime arguments - Sometimes it's a good thing to take someone else's work and make it your own. Just keep it interesting!
And Just in case you thought I'd forget to leave some links for THE CULT, Be Sure to check out their Official Website where you can get your free download of "Lucifer", the first single off their "Choice Of Weapon" album due out May 22 and don't for get to 'like' theirOfficial Facebook page!
Dig ya later!
