I would agree that it's people who maybe aren't so confident in their faith. I think a lot of people subconsciously feel that if someone doesn't agree with their belief in (a) God, that it means that that person is somehow saying that he/she thinks he/she is smarter than they are.

There are SO MANY, in fact I'll be so bold as to say the VAST MAJORITY of religious people that don't and can't comprehend the undeniable FACT that if they, being the exact same person that they are today, had been raised in a different culture, that they would believe the same as that other culture.

I.E. If say my own mother had been adopted somehow by a couple from India when she was a newborn, taken to India and raised in Indian culture, she would now today be a Hindu and hold cows sacred and believe in and follow all the doctrines of the Hindu religion. But the one and only time I tried to explain that to her 30ish years ago, she said that she would be a Christian just as she is today.

What saddens me is that this is a/the barrier that people cannot get past. People don't realize that the way that they think and feel and believe is based on only 3 things. Where you were raised, by whom you were raised, and DNA.

I'm an Atheist. But I have NO PROBLEM with any and all religions. Because I understand completely WHY people are religious. I understand completely WHY people need a higher power to believe in and turn to in hard times. I understand completely WHY people WANT to believe that there HAS to be more to life than just this. Always remember, 99% of the people on this planet are poor, and probably 97% of those people are DIRT ASS destitute POOR!! They absolutely HAVE to believe that there is something bigger and better waiting for them. They refuse to believe that in life, you live 50 years of hunger, sadness and constant betrayal, and that's ALL!?! This SHIT life is all there is? They absolutely refuse to believe that. So if you tell them that they can just live an honest, hardworking life, then there's eternal paradise after you die.......They HAVE to believe that. It's the belief in an afterlife that keeps them going in this life.

That theory (fact) that I just laid out there of course really only applies to what I call "The Braindead Masses."

But don't get me wrong. I don't think I'm smarter than anyone. I was just born with a different perspective. I was born with the knowledge that the Earth, the Universe and everything in it and about it, is 100% completely INDIFFERENT to mine, yours and any/everyone else's very existence. It just took me about 15 years to figure it out.

i think it's more "extreme people" not confident in their faith would pull this. anyone who is really that strong about their faith likely would let it go. there's a lot of "extremes" today passing themselves off as normal. well if that's the case do we redefine extreme or just recognize it when it is? i vote #2.
