We all know who the NFL Commissioner is, Roger Goodell. He is the man charged with the task of running the NFL. It is important to remember the NFL is a business. He answers to 31 other business owners within his corporation and the stock holders of the Green Bay Packers, who are represented by Mark Murphy, a former Redskins Safety from the 70's and 80's.
Under the umbrella of the Commissioner the NFL has multiple committees. Most of these committees are chaired by NFL owners, and NFL owners sit on the committees as voting members of the changes and discussions. All committee chair positions are appointed by the NFL Commissioner.
I thought it might be a fun bit of information to share this with the posters here. It probably will cause some issues with some posters. I apologize for that. Not the intent.
We all have heard about the NFL Competition Committee. This is one of the few committees in the NFL that is not chaired by an NFL owner. Rams Head Coach Jeff Fisher and Falcons GM Rich McKay co-chair this committee. Stephen Jones is also on this committee. John Mara is the only owner on the committee, but Mark Murphy who represents the Packers shareholders also is.
We all know they suggest rule changes and oversee competition.
We all also became aware of the NFL Management Council Committee thanks to the efforts of Giants owner, John Mara. This committee is also in charge of Labor relations with the NFLPA. Mara is a recent chair for this committee. It was previously co-chaired by Jerry Richardson (Panthers owner) and Pat Bowlen (Broncos owner). This committee is assisted by Harold Henderson from the NFL Offices. It is made up of the ownership of the NFL. To my knowledge no front office personnel are involved. I could be wrong on that as I have not found a roster for this committee.
John York, the husband of 49ers owner Denise DeBartolo York, and the co-chairman with her of the 49ers, heads the NFL Health and Safety Advisory Committee. Their son, Jed, essentially runs the 49ers as far as day to day operations. Jerry Jones is on this committee along with John Mara, Mark Murphy, and Falcons GM Rich McKay.
You may get the idea so far that Rich McKay is the most powerful non owner in the NFL. You would be absolutely correct in my opinion with this. He is not in Tex Schramm's territory as a powerful GM, but he is certainly the guy closest to that territory.
Sorry for the segue about McKay. It is relevant to me, if not to anyone else I apologize.
The NFL has an NFL International Committee that is now run by Clark Hunt (Chiefs owner). Previously this was run by John York, and I believe he is still on the committee though not running it since he runs the previously named committee. Bills games in Toronto, and games played overseas or in Mexico are all under the umbrella of this committee.
There is also the NFL Hall of Fame Committee which is chaired by Jerry Jones. I wonder how many people knew that? I am not sure he is qualified for this position since I don't agree with him on our own Ring of Honor, on which he has the only vote. It is important to note however that Jerry is not a voter. That still rests with the 44 media members selected as the voting committee, which I also find fault with. I assume if a voter steps down it would be the job of this committee to find a suitable replacement voter. Going forward I hope the voters will one day be the actual enshrined members of the Hall of Fame, not the media, but that is probably wishful thinking.
Another segue, for which I apologize again, Jerry Jones is also in charge of the NFL Network. So if you don't like their programming he is at least partially to blame. Jerry is assisted primarily by Giants Chairman, Steve Tisch.
There is also the NFL Stadium Committee, chaired by Art Rooney II, Steelers owner. This committee of course has to oversee all aspects of the stadiums teams play in. You can bet your bottom dollar that if the NFL moves a team to Los Angeles, or expands to Los Angeles, that this committee will be deeply involved in where that team would play. In Minnesota where they just voted for a new stadium they will be involved in overseeing the proposed construction details, just as they did for Cowboys Stadium. I do not know who sits on this committee, just who the chair is.
There is also the NFL Finance Committee, chaired by Bob McNair, Texans owner. This committee looks into the finances of potential owners. So the recent approval of Shahid Khan as the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars was approved by this committee before it was voted on by the owners. They have to know that someone coming in to NFL Ownership has the means to actually run the team financially.
There is an interesting (to me at least) segue here again. Shahid Khan bought the Jaguars from Wayne Weaver. He was the Chair of the NFL Investment Committee. Shahid Khan is on that committee now. It is chaired by Woody Johnson, Jets owner. So he not only bought the team from Weaver, he assumed Weaver's role on this committee, albeit not as chair. This committee oversees funds used for employee benefits and compensation. Zigi Wilf is the other owner on this committee. Two other members of this committee are Bob McNair's son Cal, and Buffalo Bills Chief Financial Officer, Jeffrey Littman.
The NFL Business Ventures Committee is chaired by Dean Spanos, Chargers owner. This committee chooses what products the NFL will sponsor, NFL events and venues for these events, products, marketing, etc. This is the committee I would think you would want Jerry Jones on, but to my knowledge he is not.
There is also the NFL Super Bowl Advisory Committee, chaired by Katie Blackburn, daughter of Bengals owner Mike Brown, and the Bengals Executive Vice President. She actually negotiates all Bengals contracts. Her husband Troy is the Bengals director of business development. This committee of course votes on Super Bowl venues and hears the sales pitches of the various bidders. Katie Blackburn also chairs the NFL Workplace Diversity Committee.
The NFL Broadcast Committee, is chaired by Robert Kraft, Patriots owner. This committee overseas all dealings with the TV Networks except the NFL Network.
The NFL Audit and Compensation Committee is chaired by Arthur Blank, Falcons owner. I wonder why he didn't assign this to Rich McKay? I would assume various financial officers from the various clubs are the contributors here. Audit is a bad word after all.
The NFL Stadium Security and Fan Conduct Committee is chaired by Mike Bidwell, Cardinals President. I wonder why Jeffrey Lurie escaped this job since his fans are the ones needing most fan conduct issues?
The NFL Digital Media Committee is co-chaired by Dan Snyder, Redskins owner, and Jonathon Kraft, Patriots President and son of owner Robert Kraft.
And finally the NFL Legislative Committee is chaired by Jim Irsay, Colts owner. I actually cannot currently find what this committee actually oversees or who is on it.
If anyone knows of something I have missed, please speak up. The more information we have the better.
