Review - Stone Temple Pilots (2018)

STP
I can’t say that I’m a Stone Temple Pilots fan. Historically anyway. They came along as music was in a shift from hair metal, where I grew up, to grunge, and I just lost interest in the latest trends of music and didn’t care for grunge overall. I mean, we go from women in short skirts and high heels to canvas pants and combat boots. Didn’t seem fair to me I suppose. You can’t however deny their impact on grunge itself. They carried a lot of weight, put out good music for their fans who did get into the sound, and in the end, earned respect worldwide for their music. From their founding in 1989...

Evergrey - The Storm Within - Icepick for March

evergrey
there are times i'm late to a party and i find a band too late to appreciate them while they're still cranking it out. i won't drop any names but there's more than 1 band i wanted to pick for my first "icepicks" of the year, but the ones i've found have been MIA on social media for 18+ months and if you're gonna pull a stipulation out of your ass, that's as good as any i suppose. this month, while late to the party i welcome everygrey to the ranks of the icepicks. don't completely misunderstand me; i've been playing "wrong" off of "glorious collusion" for years. maybe not since 2011 when relea...

Hinder - The Reign

Hinder-The-Reign-500x500
Formed in 2001 by OKC guitarist Joe Garvey and drummer Cody Hanson, Hinder has certainly seen some changes in themselves and industry itself in their march through the charts and global tours. In November of 2013 they made their biggest change in parting ways with charismatic front man, Austin Winkler. With Jared Weeks of Saving Abel stepping in for a bit and Nolan Neal singing “Hit the Ground” the focus soon turned to Marshall Dutton, former guitar player, writer and backup vocalist for Dallas based Faktion, who was already “in house” so to speak since 2009 helping write and produce Hinder mu...

October icepicks - Wayland, Rinse and Repeat

wayland
Been tracking on Wayland for a while now. Quite often you’d find me spinning (do we do that in the digital age still?) tunes such as She Lights it Up and Reason to Love  from their 2010 self-titled debut release for no other reason than they’re great songs from a band that has a familiar sound from the word go but something different you can find if you take a minute to really listen. I’d buy the singles as they come out, add them to our rotation usually because they’re just a good band you can count on for good tune after good tune. 2011 saw “Welcome to my Head” and outside this, kinda q...

Steelheart - Through Worlds of Stardust

steelheart
Many months ago, when I first heard Steelheart was in the process of making a new album I was beyond excited. Through Worlds of Stardust is their first album in 9 years, and recorded with his studio/touring band. They have been a long-time favorite of mine. Miljenko Matijevic’s voice has always amazed and blown me away. The control and power he has along with his incredible range makes this band one that should never be overlooked. As I have alluded to above, the one thing I have always loved about Steelheart is lead singer, Miljenko Matijevic’s incredible voice. In the opening track, “Stream ...

Blacktop Mojo Does It Again - Icepicks for September

btm-1
Never done this before. Came close a few times, yes. But I don’t recall ever actually coming back and making a band I’ve already selected as an “ice pick” to be again, an “ice pick” for a later month. Even if I had, I don’t usually go back to a previous album to project future success. Again. So I’m going to double down and make the call again. I am, however going back to the first album of this band to get an idea of where they came from, compare to their cd they just got off a national tour supporting, and try to get an idea of just what the future has in store for Blacktop Mojo. Covering 39...

Jimmy Ray - Live to Fight Another Day

jimmyray
If I were to ask you how you found your favorite rock band, where does your mind immediately wonder? Maybe you remember that time you were hanging out with your cool Uncle Jeff down in the basement after christmas dinner, and he surprised you with your first record player and “Dark Side of the Moon.” Or maybe it was that outcast kid Eric who always sat in the back of class, smelling of weed, and he introduced you to “Static Age” on a walkman with one of the ear pieces busted. Me? well... I have a secret. I’d love to say my background story was anywhere near as “punk rock” and “cred worthy” as ...

icepicks for may - thrilldriver

thrilldriver
While we do have a submissions folder for new music, our recent shift to more nationals coupled with the flood of country, hip hop, rap, and at times what amounts to drunk old men on an older acoustic guitar singing to you in your facebook e-mail, I’ve been thinking maybe it’s time to move away from this and find another way find new music. At this point I believe we’re up to 7gb of “music” that scares me more than entertains. You have to wonder if the people who bother to find our submissions address even bother to listen to see what we play and if they’re a match. Then one day you are sent s...
