13 Short Reviews For A Rather Unlucky Day

unlucky-cover-
Today has been a rough day.    Correction, rough is an understatement. Do you remember that woman who spilled hot coffee on herself at McDonalds? Right on the crotch. Now imagine yourself being that woman, and that hot coffee you just spilled on your guy-bits isn’t cooling down. The door isn’t working as you try and leave the car, and, somehow, your radio is just playing goddamn “Call Me Maybe” on repeat, and it’s at full blast. the back window is cracked and everyone can see you screaming and flailing about in your car, and they’re all watching and judging, with some pulling out the...

Blacktop Mojo Does It Again - Icepicks for September

btm-1
Never done this before. Came close a few times, yes. But I don’t recall ever actually coming back and making a band I’ve already selected as an “ice pick” to be again, an “ice pick” for a later month. Even if I had, I don’t usually go back to a previous album to project future success. Again. So I’m going to double down and make the call again. I am, however going back to the first album of this band to get an idea of where they came from, compare to their cd they just got off a national tour supporting, and try to get an idea of just what the future has in store for Blacktop Mojo. Covering 39...

Jimmy Ray - Live to Fight Another Day

jimmyray
If I were to ask you how you found your favorite rock band, where does your mind immediately wonder? Maybe you remember that time you were hanging out with your cool Uncle Jeff down in the basement after christmas dinner, and he surprised you with your first record player and “Dark Side of the Moon.” Or maybe it was that outcast kid Eric who always sat in the back of class, smelling of weed, and he introduced you to “Static Age” on a walkman with one of the ear pieces busted. Me? well... I have a secret. I’d love to say my background story was anywhere near as “punk rock” and “cred worthy” as ...

Linkin Park / Chester Bennington - Hybrid Theory 17 Years Later

chester
Chester Bennington unfortunately passed away on 7/20/17. His death has had a very strange effect on me, personally. I’m not a fan, nor have I really been a fan of Linkin Park’s music. Hell, I can honestly tell you, had you asked me prior to 4 days ago, I’d really only be able to tell you that Linkin Park is a band that came out during the age of nu-metal and they did some stuff with Jay-Z at some point. Needless to say, I wasn’t all too familiar. On the day he passed, I opened Facebook to a barrage of posts from heartbroken fans sharing their stories about how Chester and his music had touched...

JIBE - Epic Tales of Human Nature

JIBE
This is tough one for me. When I first started Renegade Radio, everything was new and everyone was “the next big thing”. We spent a few years kinda watching the scene and learning all we could about the best local talent and who the ones “on the verge” were.  11 years ago that was JIBE . If you were in a band the last thing you wanted at this time was to have to play a local show the same night they did cause almost everyone went to JIBE. Hell you probably wanted to go see them too. But again, that was 11 years ago. I’ve changed since then. Certainly the band has or they’d not be bac...

Doyle II - As We Die

doyle-aswedie
For the handful of you out there who may be unfamiliar, Doyle got his start as the guitarist for the Misfits almost 40 years ago. Where many punk artists from that era are finding comfort in new sounds (some for better, some for worse), Doyle has been charging on with a surprising amount of consistency since day one, be it on later Misfits releases, other projects with Danzig post-Misfits, or solo. If it’s got Doyle’s name attached to it, it’s almost guaranteed to evoke something rather nasty in your mind. On “Doyle II: As We Die,” Doyle teams up with Alex Story, the insanely talented frontman...

Richie Kotzen - Salting Earth Review

Richie Kotzen - Salting Earth Review
As strange as it may be, the best way I can explain Richie Kotzen is that he carries a funk rock style of soulful 70s Motown Jazz Rock fusion that can only be described as a brand new yesterday. A déjà vu of new experiences. From his solo work of an amazing now 21 solo albums to joining forces with Mike Portnoy and Billy Sheehan for The Winery Dogs to this 21 st solo effort that redefines the expectations of music for everyone else. It just does. The most amazing things he does in this release, Salting Earth , and his style in general is you remember so many things of your own past associated ...
