Icepicks for March - Blacktop Mojo

Icepicks for March - Blacktop Mojo
There are so few bands today that can capture your mind, your heart and your imagination all at once in what would appear to be a simple song. To do it several times in one release, well that will take a type of magic, I suppose. In this case, it just took some Blacktop Mojo. Formed in the fall of 2012, vocalist Matt James teamed up with drummer Nathan Gillis and a demo and hit the road. 5 years later they found themselves opening up for one of the biggest 80s rock bands in Bon Jovi just last month in Dallas, TX. Starting off “Where the Wind Blows”, their brand new release, is the title......

ok, lets turn this up - renegade radio has gone "national"

ok, lets turn this up - renegade radio has gone "national"
since our inception somewhere around 2002, renegaderadio.net has been about what you don't hear on the radio. those of us who started this trip and have come and gone over the years were all about music you just can't hear anywhere else. we'd be out in the scene and hear some incredible stuff and think "any day this will be on FM". you see, FM was relevant back then. but like reel to reel tapes, 8 tracks, am, and the CD, FM really has drifted from relevance. napster in this time has come and gone and song sharing had morphed into the culture overall. we've seen a lot of amazing things at ren......

icepicks for february - gone for days, self titled

icepicks for february - gone for days, self titled
these days where i find music blurs. label services, itunes, reverbnation contests, and just random submissions to our review process are all ways we come across music, so sometimes it can sit on the back burner and wait. recently while putting together the new stream we'll have up and going at the first of the month, i started listening to more and more "gone for days". guilty pleasure. that's the song. a bit rough on the vocals to fit the style of play, gone for days is pretty removed from "cookie cutter" type music, outside of just being good rock and roll in a time when it's needed most. i......

icepicks january - the temperance movement reviewed

icepicks january - the temperance movement reviewed
white bear by the temperance movement - someone say capture the 70s? the younger crowd will simply fall for a good sound. the older crowd will be taken back to yesterday when music was a touch raw, had an edge that pulled you into feeling and in a way, set you free from whatever it was you were doing just minutes before that song started. in this case get yourself free is kinda where i ripped off that quote.  :) there is a sense of honesty that other bands have tried to pull off over the years but can't always get away with for one reason or another. in this case the temperance movem......

wrapping up 2016 - best of icepicks and a glance at 2017

wrapping up 2016 - best of icepicks and a glance at 2017
we don't have an official "Renegade Radio" award ceremony and that's one thing we're looking at for this coming year but i'll get to that later. for now i'd just like to go over my best of "best of" so to speak and just call out the ones who i keep going back to time and time through the year. until the last, these are in no specific order. the last of course will be my "best of 2016" but again - i get ahead of myself. :) first up is decembers winner, hell or highwater. my initial high has leveled off some and perhaps come back to earth a touch overall, but there are simply some bad ass songs ......

icepicks december, hell or highwater

icepicks december, hell or highwater
i wish you were here for days like these but you saw all the world gave you to see somtimes life just slips away so shed a tear for the dead remember the legacy they left for the time we have left  remember the life and not the death i had a lot already written and so close to saying everything i had to say about the band. then this song came on, "remember the life and not the death" and given how this year has taken a toll on our own musical heros and our own personal losses that can never be replaced, everything about this song just made me fall in love with music and my own memories a......

An Evening with Patrick Kennison

An Evening with Patrick Kennison
Most of us go through high school without a clear path ahead but with any luck, some questions answered about what we’d like to do with our time and life. Then again, some people just know early on and have never looked back. “My first band was in middle school” started out Patrick Kennison, front man and creative force behind rock band Heaven Below. “we played half covers, half originals, won several battles and I even won some guitar competitions.” This could well have been cemented in high school by an errant guidance counselor. “By the time I got into high school, I knew what I wanted to d......

Why Your Band Gets Looked Over

Why Your Band Gets Looked Over
We are into our 2nd run working with Reverb Nation in finding new artists to play and promote. Round 1 brought out some MAJOR scored in violet janine, grimmjack, moxie and the influence, and many many more and so much has been added to our rotation. But finding these bands was tough. REAL tough. You've got a lot of crap to get through to find the good stuff and along the way you start to notice why you gloss over some and don't even listen to others and in the end, start to understand in depth as to why you will listen to a song again vs. hope to GOD you can forget that last bands name an......
