icepicks - 2017

ice-2017
2017 is over and it’s time to look back and pull out some highlights and then see what 2018 has to offer and what I am looking forward to. So, my usual list of awards are usually one-offs and kinda strange, but it wouldn’t be me if it were anything else now would it? So, in no particular order of preference, here are my 2017 awards as I come up with them and name them on the fly. I’ll also sneak in a look at 2018 for a local band that is about to make some serious noise nationally. Most interesting e-mail Zoe Friedman from Thrilldriver . Needless to say we get many submissions a day. When we w...

Next Next Time

Livin on, passin time Another day goes by A little laughter, shed a tear Another year goes by Lookin back, movin on Another life will live its time I never seem to realize that I could be seeing someone for the last time today Always taking things for granted that there’d be another day But you never know and you can never say That there will ever be a next next time Kickin back, smiling on Looking back at days gone by Yea I’ll cry, it’s ok Memories are meant to carry on Nod in silence, laugh out loud Another life will live its time Little did I know that maybe I could look back but I could ne...

Hinder - The Reign

Hinder-The-Reign-500x500
Formed in 2001 by OKC guitarist Joe Garvey and drummer Cody Hanson, Hinder has certainly seen some changes in themselves and industry itself in their march through the charts and global tours. In November of 2013 they made their biggest change in parting ways with charismatic front man, Austin Winkler. With Jared Weeks of Saving Abel stepping in for a bit and Nolan Neal singing “Hit the Ground” the focus soon turned to Marshall Dutton, former guitar player, writer and backup vocalist for Dallas based Faktion, who was already “in house” so to speak since 2009 helping write and produce Hinder mu...

October icepicks - Wayland, Rinse and Repeat

wayland
Been tracking on Wayland for a while now. Quite often you’d find me spinning (do we do that in the digital age still?) tunes such as She Lights it Up and Reason to Love  from their 2010 self-titled debut release for no other reason than they’re great songs from a band that has a familiar sound from the word go but something different you can find if you take a minute to really listen. I’d buy the singles as they come out, add them to our rotation usually because they’re just a good band you can count on for good tune after good tune. 2011 saw “Welcome to my Head” and outside this, kinda q...

Blacktop Mojo Does It Again - Icepicks for September

btm-1
Never done this before. Came close a few times, yes. But I don’t recall ever actually coming back and making a band I’ve already selected as an “ice pick” to be again, an “ice pick” for a later month. Even if I had, I don’t usually go back to a previous album to project future success. Again. So I’m going to double down and make the call again. I am, however going back to the first album of this band to get an idea of where they came from, compare to their cd they just got off a national tour supporting, and try to get an idea of just what the future has in store for Blacktop Mojo. Covering 39...

Icepicks for August - Ingram Hill

ingram-hill-look-your-best-album-cover1
When making a playlist there’s a lot of things I think about; how well known is the song or band, does it fit the style/mood I’m after for the show itself and so forth. Some bands I pick up and while they may mean a lot at the time, in time I forget to play them. First for a few weeks, then months and then I just remember them while driving home and think DAMN IT – load up some of xyz bands music and listen to it again. But I don’t. I may or may not remember it much after that and if I spent a lot of time thinking about it I’ll slip into depression cause at the time I really did love that musi...

icepicks for July - Colossal Street Jam, Living Free

CSJ
At times you never know where your next favorite song is coming from. In the 80s it was easy as the “machine” fed you hit after hit in at times an assembly line fashion. However, one thing for sure is in that time you heard a LOT of styles of music. You heard southern, corporate, glam, pop, alternative, metal, blues, and the list went on and on. But some bands stood out on their own for how well they did their sound. Colossal Street Jam has a recognizable sound all their own that they in fact do VERY well. With a Black Crows kinda vibe taken deeper than the Crows ever did, their 2016...

Icepicks for June - Bad Moon Born

badmoonborn
The good thing about working with a lot of passionate people in this business is people get to know what you like and usually even why. So when the twisted one slides me a "you'll dig this" I tend to pay attention. Recently he introduced me to another Australian band called Bad Moon Born  and their EP Chemical Lullabies . Holy hell this was a "hold the presses" moment as I copied the music to our server and got them into the rotation that very day. Let me explain, this is rare for me. I collect music and about once a month I'll get the new music out there and sure, I'm glad to break my st...
