Icepicks for August - Ingram Hill

ingram-hill-look-your-best-album-cover1
When making a playlist there’s a lot of things I think about; how well known is the song or band, does it fit the style/mood I’m after for the show itself and so forth. Some bands I pick up and while they may mean a lot at the time, in time I forget to play them. First for a few weeks, then months and then I just remember them while driving home and think DAMN IT – load up some of xyz bands music and listen to it again. But I don’t. I may or may not remember it much after that and if I spent a lot of time thinking about it I’ll slip into depression cause at the time I really did love that musi...

icepicks for July - Colossal Street Jam, Living Free

CSJ
At times you never know where your next favorite song is coming from. In the 80s it was easy as the “machine” fed you hit after hit in at times an assembly line fashion. However, one thing for sure is in that time you heard a LOT of styles of music. You heard southern, corporate, glam, pop, alternative, metal, blues, and the list went on and on. But some bands stood out on their own for how well they did their sound. Colossal Street Jam has a recognizable sound all their own that they in fact do VERY well. With a Black Crows kinda vibe taken deeper than the Crows ever did, their 2016...

Icepicks for June - Bad Moon Born

badmoonborn
The good thing about working with a lot of passionate people in this business is people get to know what you like and usually even why. So when the twisted one slides me a "you'll dig this" I tend to pay attention. Recently he introduced me to another Australian band called Bad Moon Born  and their EP Chemical Lullabies . Holy hell this was a "hold the presses" moment as I copied the music to our server and got them into the rotation that very day. Let me explain, this is rare for me. I collect music and about once a month I'll get the new music out there and sure, I'm glad to break my st...

icepicks for may - thrilldriver

thrilldriver
While we do have a submissions folder for new music, our recent shift to more nationals coupled with the flood of country, hip hop, rap, and at times what amounts to drunk old men on an older acoustic guitar singing to you in your facebook e-mail, I’ve been thinking maybe it’s time to move away from this and find another way find new music. At this point I believe we’re up to 7gb of “music” that scares me more than entertains. You have to wonder if the people who bother to find our submissions address even bother to listen to see what we play and if they’re a match. Then one day you are sent s...

Icepicks for April - Abacu5

abacu_20170429-231925_1
Abacu5 out of Dallas has been playing the local scene for many years. They also have the distinction of being able to tour in China after being selected as the guest artist for the Shanghia American School playing several live music venues through the area. This month they release their first full length cd, A Long Way to Begin and the sound is a fantastic mix of rock, soulful melodies, and a wide range of sound that simply won't allow the band to be easily classified. Geared more for a thoughtful audience you can certainly turn off the world and tune into some great music. We kick off with Bl...

Icepicks for March - Blacktop Mojo

Icepicks for March - Blacktop Mojo
There are so few bands today that can capture your mind, your heart and your imagination all at once in what would appear to be a simple song. To do it several times in one release, well that will take a type of magic, I suppose. In this case, it just took some Blacktop Mojo . Formed in the fall of 2012, vocalist Matt James teamed up with drummer Nathan Gillis and a demo and hit the road. 5 years later they found themselves opening up for one of the biggest 80s rock bands in Bon Jovi just last month in Dallas, TX. Starting off “Where the Wind Blows”, their brand new release, is the title ...

icepicks for february - gone for days, self titled

icepicks for february - gone for days, self titled
these days where i find music blurs. label services, itunes, reverbnation contests, and just random submissions to our review process are all ways we come across music, so sometimes it can sit on the back burner and wait. recently while putting together the new stream we'll have up and going at the first of the month, i started listening to more and more " gone for days ". guilty pleasure. that's the song. a bit rough on the vocals to fit the style of play, gone for days is pretty removed from "cookie cutter" type music, outside of just being good rock and roll in a time when it's needed most....

icepicks january - the temperance movement reviewed

icepicks january - the temperance movement reviewed
white bear by the temperance movement  - someone say capture the 70s? the younger crowd will simply fall for a good sound. the older crowd will be taken back to yesterday when music was a touch raw, had an edge that pulled you into feeling and in a way, set you free from whatever it was you were doing just minutes before that song started. in this case get yourself free is kinda where i ripped off that quote.  :) there is a sense of honesty that other bands have tried to pull off over the years but can't always get away with for one reason or another. in this case the temperance move...
