Cavo - The Painful Art of Letting Go

Cavo - The Painful Art of Letting Go
Preparing for the new release, I wanted to take a minute to go to their past. Way back into their past and look at an early effort from Cavo, just to give you a point of reference in how far this band has come. But also to tell you how far ahead of the game they started. You see, I believe we all have a private cd or two that we just keep going back to when times are great, or even when we need something familiar to get us through not so great times. You can look at their musical career and remember songs like Champaign and Crash and even one of my personal favorites, We All Fall Down, and j......

A "Take" On Electronic Rock: The Musical Style of The Taking

A "Take" On Electronic Rock: The Musical Style of The Taking
First they called themselves Structure.  Then the name changed to Secret Secure.  Now they call themselves The Taking.  Under the current name and banner, this four-piece band from San Antonio, Texas combines elements of electronic music and rock to form a sound their Secret Secure songs were missing – sonic variety.  While songs under the name Secret Secure were good (especially “Lady”), a common criticism I kept hearing from a few listeners is that they all sounded the same.  This criticism was soon silenced in a big way. After some length of time passed and this fou......

The State Of The Musician's Address

The State Of The Musician's Address
Welcome! This is the state of the musician address, by a musician for the music fans.  We have a lot to speak about on this day. The world has changed for us, those that have picked up an instrument or sang in front of a crowd in the last 20 years or so. It is now really hard to sell music, venues have embraced the pay to play system, and nobody knows who is supposed to market the performer now.  The listener does not, in general, want to purchase an album anymore. Ten songs for 10 dollars is too expensive to take a cheap gamble. All that time in a recording studio comes out of a mus......

Deaf Havana - Old Souls

Deaf Havana - Old Souls
In another rare move, Old Souls, the bands 1st official US release, has simply exceeded my lofty expectations and given me an anchor in a sea of lost music searching for a home. I honestly have no idea what that reference really means, but it sounds cool so I’ll keep it.   I would love to say that I could pick out a favorite, but that would imply that there are “less favorite” songs on this release. That’s simply not the case as Old Souls is one rocking hit after another, never falling into a rut or making me feel like I heard the songs before. I can say some songs will hit home in wa......

what's in a cover?

what's in a cover?
But to make an entire career out of blatantly emulating - actually, I'm going to go with Impersonating - what was already done? Well,  I just don't get. Sure you can go to Vegas, get married by (or even To) Elvis, Have Marilyn Monroe sing "Happy Birthday" to you.. Or even catch a never-aging Beatles as they sing their classic set from the Ed Sullivan show, so many years ago. you can go to your local dive bar, and catch the best Creed tribute band this side of the county.     Maybe I'm having a little difficulty seeing the fine line between art, appreciation & Plagairism?......
