Footsteps Heard on The Spiral Stairs

The story you are about to read is the second installment of the blog series “Itasca The Friendly Ghost”.

Waking up in the middle of the night, my mother adjusted her pillow and tried to fall back asleep.  Tossing and turning a few times to find a comfortable position again, she finally settled in and started to relax.

Suddenly, a loud series of THUDS complimented with CREAKS and CRACKS originated from the foyer adjacent to the master bedroom.

THUD!  THUD!  THUD!  CRACK!  CREAK!  THUD! THUD! THUD!

Rising out of bed, she tiptoed her way to the bedroom door and placed her ear up against it.

THUD! THUD!  CRACK! CREAK! THUD! THUD! THUD!

Slowly opening the door, she peaked out into the moonlit foyer and scanned the spiral stairs leading to the upstairs bedroom and loft area.  Not a person or animal in sight, only the shadows of pecan trees being projected on the long leaf pine floors.

Her curiosity satisfied, she walked back into the bedroom, closed the door behind her and crawled back into bed.  Five minutes later, the same series of noises erupted once again.

Climbing out of bed once again, she decided to investigate a bit further.  Thinking I might have made my way downstairs to use the bathroom, my mother made her way into the foyer and down the hall way to the main downstairs bathroom.  Finding it vacant and pitch black, she made her way back into the foyer to the foot of the spiral stairs. Carefully climbing her way up the narrow staircase, she reached the landing to a quiet, pitch black second floor.  Quietly opening the door to my bedroom, she saw me sleeping soundly with only a tuff of hair peeking out from underneath the covers.

“Ok, I can’t be hearing things,” she thought to herself.  “There has to be a reasonable explanation for this loud noise.”

Softly closing the bedroom door behind her, she carefully made her way down the stairs and ushered herself back to bed this time leaving her bedroom door open.  The moment she slipped back underneath the covers, THUD! THUD! THUD!  CRACK! CREAK! THUD! THUD! THUD!

Leaping out of bed, she ran into the foyer her eyes and ears concentrated on the staircase.  THUD! THUD! THUD! CRACK! CREAK! THUD! THUD! THUD!  As the noise seemed to travel up and down the stairs, the side railings swayed with it.  Up and down it traveled as if someone was walking up and down the stairs.  The noise continued for several minutes until it reached the bottom step and came to an abrupt stop.

Thinking that this was the last of the noise, she made her way back to bed.   However, the THUDS, CRACKS, and CREAKS continued several times over the course of the night making it very difficult to fall back asleep.
